Security and Software Updates

This is the official software that WSST supports and maintains for each platform.

Our officially supported mail clients for use with GMail, the company wide e-mail system, include Google Chrome and Firefox for the web interface and Thunderbird for a traditional non-web based interface.  Please note the recommended client for mail is Chrome which provides the fullest experience for using GMail.  There can be issues including sync problems with using Firefox and Thunderbird.

In addition, WSST will patch and maintain the following software listed by platform below:

Windows

Windows System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) is a systems management tool for maintaining CISL's Windows environment.  SCCM provides CISL as well as other divisions at NCAR the ability to more efficiently manage the Windows operating system including imaging, reporting, and update capabilities.  Like any operating system security vulnerabilities and other stability issues target Microsoft Windows operating systems. SCCM is also the tool WSST uses for managing and distributing critical Windows and software patches to CISL computers managed by WSST.

In order to automatically and securely keep Windows computers on the network up-to-date with security patches and other critical updates, we are pleased to offer SCCM to CISL staff. CISL staff will occasionally get notifications that new updates are ready to be installed on their computers through Software Center at their convenience or will be installed for them after a certain deadline, and their computers may need to be rebooted. It is best to reboot your computer as soon as you receive this message so security updates are implemented. In order to receive updates your computer needs to be on the internal hard wired CISL network. Docking your laptop frequently in your office is recommended.

Computers where Automatic updates will run properly includes:
