Thunder was a two-node IBM p690 system that CISL used primarily for testing purposes, though it also hosted some production work. It was a counterpart to NCAR's production IBM p690 Bluesky system, but had IBM's new (at the time), experimental "Federation" high-speed interconnect for inter-node communication. Under UCAR's ARCS subcontract with IBM, IBM had proposed and NCAR had considered performing an upgrade to Bluesky, by replacing its IBM "Colony" high-speed interconnect fabric with "Federation", but ultimately chose to not disrupt the production workload.
