Firefly was a test system for Bluefire and was used by CISL systems and consulting staff to test new software before deploying it in production on Bluefire. Firefly also served to host operational forecasts performed by the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System (AMPS) when Bluefire was unavailable. AMPS generates twice daily operational forecasts in support of the National Science Foundation's Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and the scientists living there.
