How To Apply

How to Apply:

Please read through this entire page before applying.  Reaching out to references should be done early and in parallel (see what I did there?) to the other steps.

  1. Review Eligibility & Benefits to determine eligibility and academic standing
     
  2. Read through 2022 Technical Projects or CODE Intern to find one or two that match your interests.
     
  3. Get an unofficial transcript from your college or university.  You can likely download a free copy from your school's Student Portal. 
    • Graduate students should include their undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
       
  4. Update your resume/CV
     
  5. Write a not-to-exceed one-page personal statement clearly describing each of the following five items. Use 1 inch margins, no smaller than 11 point font size:
    1. NCAR and SIParCS embraces a work environment that is inclusive, diverse, and equitable.  SIParCS is dedicated to enhancing the diversity of future high performance computing and scientific communities and sharing our science with a broader audience.  Describe how you, based on your personal background and life experiences (including social, cultural, familial, educational, leadership or future plans, or other opportunities or challenges) will contribute to this community during and after participation in SIParCS.
    2. why you are interested in this specific project 
      1. *TIP*  if applying to 2 projects, write 2 different personal statements to address why this project
    3. your technical interests and skills that are not covered in your resume/CV/transcripts
    4. how this program addresses your educational and career goals
    5. what you expect to gain if selected
       
  6. Asking for Letters of Recommendation 
    1. ASK EARLY!
    2. Reach out to 2 people who can speak to your academic work and/or work ethic and ask if they are willing to serve as references.
      1. Academic related references preferred.
    3. When you have identified 2 references, submit your references' contact info
      1. *TIP*  you can (and should) complete this step before you submit your application
      2. The deadline to submit names of references is January 10, 2022. If your names are not submitted by this date your application will be considered incomplete. Once you submit your reference contact info, your references will automatically receive an email from an @ucar.edu with directions on how to submit a letter of reference
        1. Follow-up with your references to see if they received our email.  Ask them to check their Spam folder.
        2. Follow-up with your references to see if they submitted a letter.  Deadline for your references to submit a letter is January 17, 2022 at 5pm MST
           
  7. Prepare your application packet(s). 
    1. Combine your cover letter, resume/CV, and transcripts into 1 PDF document
    2. Name the PDF “LastName_FirstName_ProjectNumber”  Example: “Hopper_Grace_Project5.pdf” or “Hopper_Grace_CODE.pdf” if applying to the CODE position
      1. *TIP*  You should have a separate packet for each project you apply to.
         
  8. Apply through Workday
    1. Undergraduate Application (link TBA) - This link is the same for all 2022 Undergraduate Student SIParCS Internships Application.  If applying to 2 projects, please have materials ready for both projects as you will have an opportunity to submit both materials through one application.
    2. Graduate Application (link TBA) - This link is the same for all 2022 Graduate Student SIParCS Internships Application.  If applying to 2 projects, please have materials ready for both projects as you will have an opportunity to submit both materials through one application.
    3. CISL Outreach, Diversity, Education (CODE) Intern Application (link TBA)
       
    4. *TIP* When uploading your initial resume/CV, the system will scan your resume and autofill prior job information.  You only need to have 1 prior job information so save time by removing all of your extra positions.  In the system, you MUST have at least one prior job.
    5. *TIP* Desired Salary: We have a TBD hourly salary for interns which is not open to negotiation.  You can put "N/A"
    6. *TIP* If applying to 2 projects, have both application packets ready to upload

 

For Summer 2022, we are currently planning for an in-person internship program although everything is bound by the local safety and health regulations due to COVID-19. In 2021 and 2020, our entire program continued as a completely remote internship program.  Read more about how we transitioned to a virtual internship program.
