Using Augmented Reality to Engage People with Atmospheric Science News

Augmented Reality (AR) superimposes computer generated graphics and imagery onto a real world camera feed. After the release of Pokemon GO, arguably the most popular AR game to date, the usage of this technology exploded overnight. Countless AR applications are being developed today, and big tech companies are investing billions of dollars into researching AR frameworks and head mounted displays. In order to engage audiences in the near future, news delivery platforms could adapt  AR by allowing easier content creation and distribution tools. The NCAR Augmented News application aims to engage audiences with atmospheric science news by providing an accessible platform for atmospheric news content creators to publish AR 3D models, simulations, and animations alongside news articles. The ultimate goal of this project is to create a complete pipeline where scientists can upload their AR content, add contextual captions/highlights, and distribute the content through a smartphone app.
