CISL staff attended the Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing in Portland, Oregon last week, where over 400 students, faculty, and sponsors assembled to discuss how to encourage and increase opportunities for underrepresented groups in the computing field. NCAR sponsored participation for four students at the conference, and hosted a table with information and materials about internship opportunities and professional development programs like SOARS and SIParCS. Matthew Woitaszek, Janice Kauvar and Marijke Unger spoke with more than half the participants over the course of four days, encouraging faculty members to nominate students for NCAR programs, answering questions about the scientific research NCAR enables, and discussing with students how they can hone their skills working with us.
