The NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) has received an honorable mention in the 2015 ASHRAE Society Technology Awards, after receiving a First Place award at the regional level this summer. The awards recognize outstanding achievements by society members who have successfully applied innovative building design that incorporates ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and air quality.

ASHRAE is a global society dedicated to sustainable technology for the built environment, focusing on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration, and sustainability. The society dates back to 1894 and has more than 50,000 members worldwide.

The NWSC was one of three honorable mentions awarded in its category (New Industrial Facilities and Processes). ASHRAE issued no first or second place awards in the category for 2015. The facility received its First Place Technology Award in the New Industrial Facility Category at the regional level, allowing it to compete for the international society award. The NWSC was also the only award winner for the Rocky Mountain and neighboring regions this year.

The NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) opened in October of 2012, and has garnered several awards for its sustainable design, including a Regional First Place ASHRAE Technology Award and an International ASHRAE Society Honorable Mention.

ASHRAE awards are widely regarded as some of the most prestigious industry honors, and prizes are often not given in several categories. Contenders for the technology awards must submit one year’s actual, verifiable operating data to demonstrate performance against ASHRAE standards for effective energy management, air quality, and occupant comfort.

“Coming from a mechanical engineering background, ASHRAE is one of those respected organizations that represents the gold standard,” according to Aaron Andersen, who worked with the RMH Group on the award submission. “The fact that ASHRAE recognizes very few nominations and bestows first place on an even smaller number adds to the prestige. The NWSC being recognized at the society level as a world class facility is truly an honor.”

The RMH Group, a Denver-based mechanical, electrical, and industrial process consulting engineering firm, designed the NWSC’s building systems. The firm was also recognized in the NWSC’s other recent awards, including ‘Green’ Data Center of the Year (DatacenterDynamics North American Awards) and Uptime Institute’s Green Enterprise IT Award for Facility Design Implementation, both in 2013.
