CRAY - LynxNCAR has acquired a new supercomputer to be used as a test platform. The machine, a Cray XT5m Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) supercomputer nicknamed "Lynx," will be used primarily to test Cray hardware and software in NCAR's computing environment. Lynx was installed at NCAR on April 26.

The new system will also be made available for NCAR and UCAR community users who have access to larger Cray XT systems at other institutions, so they can test code modifications and run other small tasks locally.

The purchase marks the return of Cray computers to NCAR, after an eight-year absence. Before that, Cray machines occupied the Mesa Laboratory facility for 25 years, from July 1977 through September 2002.
