4th Conference on Stochastic Weather Generators

conference
Oct. 2 to Oct. 4, 2018

8:00 am – 5:00 pm MDT

NCAR, Main Seminar Room

Stochastic weather generators are mathematical or statistical models or algorithms whose realizations capture the statistical distribution of weather and climate variables. Stochastic weather generators are critical components of many studies requiring weather inputs.  For example, agricultural and hydrologic risk studies, stochastic climate model downscaling, renewable energy volatility and feasibility studies or infrastructure planning studies.

SWGEN 2018 will bring together a wide range of researchers from applied mathematics, statistics, hydrology, atmospheric science, climate and energy science to discuss and disseminate state-of-the-art methods and recent applications of stochastic weather generators.  Topics of broad interest within this field include:

  • Nonlinear processes
  • Stochastic climate models
  • Multivariate processes
  • Space-time models
  • Nonstationary models
  • Big spatial or spatiotemporal weather data analysis and modeling
  • High frequency data
  • State-space models
  • Multiscale models
  • Extremes
  • Analogue or resampling techniques
  • Non-Gaussian processes

with applications in:

  • Climate model downscaling
  • Renewable energy (solar, wind, etc.)
  • Hydrology
  • Agriculture and crop studies
  • Air quality
  • Insurance
  • Environmental engineering
  • Ecology

The conference highlights will include two keynote speeches by world-renowned experts in the field,

  • Upmanu Lall, Alan and Carol Silberstein Professor of Engineering, Columbia University and
  • Philippe Naveau, Research Scientist, Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et l'Environnement

along with an opening poster session and two days of oral presentations.
