Abstract

In late 2018, Sandia National Laboratories’ Center for Computing Research formed the Software Engineering & Research Department, the first group of its kind at the national laboratory. This interdisciplinary department employs over 20 Research Software Engineers (RSEs), Software Engineering Researchers (SERs), system administrators, and IT Service Management professionals, all aiming to improve scientific software and its results throughout its Research, Develop, and Deploy pipeline. In this talk, Miranda Mundt will discuss the creation and work of the department, the cultural barriers involved, and the overall impact of the department and its vision.
