Seminar: Research Software Engineering in Practice – The Software Engineering & Research Department at Sandia National Laboratories
1:00 – 2:00 pm MDT
Speaker: Miranda Mundt, Sandia National Laboratories
In late 2018, Sandia National Laboratories’ Center for Computing Research formed the Software Engineering & Research Department, the first group of its kind at the national laboratory. This interdisciplinary department employs over 20 Research Software Engineers (RSEs), Software Engineering Researchers (SERs), system administrators, and IT Service Management professionals, all aiming to improve scientific software and its results throughout its Research, Develop, and Deploy pipeline. In this talk, Miranda Mundt will discuss the creation and work of the department, the cultural barriers involved, and the overall impact of the department and its vision.
Miranda Mundt (she/her) is a Research Software Engineer in the Department of Software Engineering & Research at Sandia National Laboratories. She partners with scientific software teams to support their continuous development and improve their state of software development and quality practice. Her research interests include human factors in software engineering, motivation and incentivization in software quality, and software quality frameworks (particularly as they relate to reproducibility). Additionally, she has a dedication to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and STEM Outreach efforts, particularly as those efforts benefit minorities and women. She is a current member of the Steering Committee for the United States Research Software Engineer Association (US-RSE) and co-chairs the Outreach and Group Management working groups. She also acts as the Families@SC Chair and Inclusivity Liaison to Infrastructure for SC23.
