The CISL HPC Advisory Panel (CHAP) met May 8, 2014, at the NCAR Mesa Lab to review and recommend allocations for computational requests from university researchers with NSF awards in the atmospheric or closely related sciences. The CHAP's focus continues to be on the computational experiments being proposed and their efficiency.
There were 28 requests from university researchers requesting large allocations; 27 requests received allocations. Requests totaled 69 million core-hours on Yellowstone, with requests ranging from a high of 10.2 million core-hours to a low of 220,000 core-hours. The median request size was 1.9 million core-hours.
The CHAP allocated approximately 57.5 million Yellowstone core-hours, with a median allocation of 1.9 million core-hours. Now that Yellowstone is generally available, university users should request small allocations to conduct benchmark runs to provide more accurate calculations of their resource needs.
The CHAP encourages all future university projects to consider the dramatic increase in available computing resources made possible with Yellowstone when preparing future allocation requests, but also to give due consideration to large-scale storage needs and plans.
The distribution of the May 2014 allocations is shown in the chart below.
