CHAP: October 2009 University Allocations Summary

The CISL HPC Advisory Panel (CHAP) met on October 29, 2009, to review and recommend allocations for computational requests from university researchers with an NSF award in the atmospheric or closely related sciences. The CHAP’s focus continues to be on the computational experiments being proposed and their efficiency.

There were 24 requests from university researchers requesting large allocations. All of the requests received an allocation. University researchers requested 9.5 GAUs (General Allocation Units). Requests ranged from a high of 1.78M GAUs to a low of 30k GAUs. The median request size was 200k GAUs.
A little over 5.9M GAUs were allocated by the CHAP with allocations ranging from 645k GAUs to 30k GAUs. The median allocation was 200k GAUs.

The distribution of allocations is given in the chart below.

Not shown on the chart are the small requests and allocations for the university research community. During the six months preceding the October 2009 panel meeting, 115 small allocations were made for a total of about 493k GAUs.  One allocation of 270k GAUs (previously reviewed by the panel) was transferred to a new project. So the total of university allocations for the past 6 months (including the October panel meeting) is 6.7M GAUs.
