Abstract
This presentation will review the need for very large inexpensive archives as we experience the predicted exponential growth in data. The trends and predictions of current and possible emerging storage technologies will be discussed, but the primary focus will be on tape and disk data storage device technologies. The technical challenges facing these technologies as the storage densities get higher will be discussed in detail. In addition, some of the new tape and disk technologies will be reviewed that are designed to meet the growing data demands.
