Notice to high school students interested in computing and Big Data:
16 March 2015 is the deadline to apply for NCAR’s first “Data Analytics Bootcamp for High School Students”
This is an opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors to learn about being a Data Scientist, a new kind of job that has only existed for about seven years. The real power behind companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Expedia, and eBay/PayPal comes from people who learned how to interpret large amounts of data and used their insights to create useful products and services. This one-week workshop will introduce you to the methods and possibilities of data analytics.
According to the Harvard Business Review, the data scientist is “a high-ranking professional with the training and curiosity to make discoveries in the world of big data.” In their article titled, Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century, they explain that the information economy needs more data scientists every year because “companies are now wrestling with information that comes in varieties and volumes never encountered before.”
The Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado is presenting a “Data Analytics Bootcamp for High School Students” that is open to sophomores and juniors (as of March 2015) enrolled in a Boulder Valley School District high school. There is no charge to attend this workshop at NCAR’s Mesa Lab facility in Boulder on 22–26 June 2015.
This workshop in data analytics will include a tour of the Mesa Lab, lectures by scientists and statisticians from NCAR and surrounding universities, a field trip to NCAR’s new supercomputing center in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and hands-on experience using the open-source statistical programming environment R to analyze scientific data.
What you need to bring is an interest in using data to answer questions. You should feel comfortable using computers and have some familiarity with writing programs. NCAR will provide computers for your use during the workshop.
Two steps are required to apply:
Cost: Free
Application deadline: 16 March 2015
